Avoid credit problems by learning to spend wisely Being knowledgeable about your credit card is essential. All of the large purchases you will make, either now or in the future, are dependent on your credit history. Lenders will only entrust you with their money if they believe you will pay them back. If you've gotten into credit card debt, they will see this and not be as willing to help you out. Although they make money off the interest you pay when you don't pay your balance in full, they do not profit from people who skip out on payments completely. Therefore, if you want a credit card in the future, you must have reasonably good credit. If a credit card company does agree to give you a card even though you have bad credit, you still may be at a disadvantage. Because you are immediately trusted less than someone with perfect credit, you will be charged higher interest. This is the credit card company's way of combating possible losses without punishing everyone. They impose stiffer charges on those more likely to inflict the company with losses (those people who already have a history of late or missed payments). So if you know you are not likely to pay all of your balances in full every month, and will therefore be affected by the interest rate, try to keep your credit history as sparkly clean as possible. There is a credit card offer out there for all of us, but that does not mean that we have to take them up on it. Consider your options and use them carefully so that you do not end up in a lot of credit card debts. Credit history begins early Having a credit card for college students specifically is a good idea. With this, one can start building good credit at an early age. These credit cards generally have low credit lines, which controls spending while still allowing credit to be built and increased financial experience. Knowledge of the world of the credit card at an early age decreases the confusion and discomfort many experience when being fully immersed in finances. Owning a credit card is the first step into the American financial system every adult must enter into at some point.
